In squishy blob, circular dog, Liu considers the liminal spaces created when structures of communication don’t account for the ambiguity of words and feelings. Inspired by videos and photos sent from her parents, Liu imagines the dog into a liminal family member who occupies space inaccessible to traditional modes of analyzing thoughts and emotions, yet can bridge the gaps between people, distance, and time. Saying what words can’t about memory, longing, love, and even resentment, the dog is a vessel through which affection is expressed and transformed. As prescribed practices of analyzing interpersonal dynamics fail, constructions of feeling dissolve into unbound and amorphous blobs. – Hattie Schultz
